Founded by King Alfonso VIII and Doña Leonor de Inglaterra (Eleanor of England) around 1200, it was the largest hospital along the Way of St. James. Traces of the original 13th century construction can still be seen. The remarkable 16th century Patio de Romeros and Puerta de Romeros still remain. Extensions were made between the 17th and 19th centuries to make way for additional hospital rooms. Today it is the seat of the Rectorship of the University of Burgos and the Faculty of Law. The Hospital del Rey was recently restored and presented with the Europa Nostra Award.
