It is the most important promenade in Burgos. Designed by Fernando González de Lara, the Paseo del Espolón has undergone many changes throughout the history of the city. In the middle of the promenade are four statues which were given to the city by King Carlos III in 1788. They come from the balustrade of the Royal Palace of Madrid and represent Fernán González, Alfonso XI, Juan I and Enrique III. In 1868, an additional four statues were donated by Isabel II. The sculptured images represent Wamba, Alfonso VI, Juan II and Saint Millán. Important buildings located along the Paseo de Espolón include: the Casa Consistorial (Town Hall, 1783), the Casa del Consulado (Maritime Consulate, 1794), the Palace of the Diputación Provincial (1864) and the Teatro Principal (1853).
